Midterm Submission

Image
Midterm Submission I chose my article topic as a Dill Salmon recipe because my magazine is about healthy eating and this main course is supposed to be healthy. I make this meal all the time at home and think its pretty good, that's why I decided to use this as my main recipe. It was also super convenient for me to make at home with my mom because we already knew how to make it. For my cover template, I chose this layout because I thought it was simple and had a little pop of color to it. I also think the colors I chose in the cover template compliment each other. Also, I tried utilizing features from other food magazines that I saw. My table of contents layout is also very simple which plays along with my cover. I think it makes it look organized and I really like the top right hand corner where it says "contents" because it adds more color to the page. On the right side are three different meals that I made. For my actual recipes, I plan...

Schedule Photo Shoots

Image
I scheduled this shoot to occur on Saturday Dec.15th. My mom and I would be involved in the making of this and this day was best for the both of us. We made it a little after noon so we could eat it for lunch. We made dill salmon with sweet potatoes and peas. The salmon recipe is my moms, the sweet potato recipe is mine, and the peas are from a can. I personally love this meal because I think it's very tasty, which is one of the reasons why I picked this meal to feature. In the shoot I decided to photograph every action my mom was doing when she was making the food. I tried to get pictures of her doing different things and I tried to get different types of pictures as well. There are close-ups, wide-shots, over-the-should, mid-shot, etc. I tried to angle some of my shots too. I knew that I wanted a variety of pictures to choose from so I took lots of pictures and examined them after.

Scout Locations for Photo Shoots

Image
The only location I had in my mind was my kitchen in my house. Since my magazine is based on making recipes at home, I thought it would be best to do it in my own home. It would also be a super convenient spot to make the recipes because then I wouldn't have to drive anywhere else. Also, my kitchen has all the accessories and ingredients I would need to make all the recipes. My mom will be helping me with the recipes and I will be taking the pictures of the process. This would work out very well for the both of us because we are both familiar with our kitchen. As you can see in the pictures, I was able to find different areas in the kitchen to take the photos of my mom making the food. We would also use different counters and the dining table for the photos as well.

Schedule Interviews/develop questions

I found the recipes I put in my flat plan on random sites. I typed in healthy recipes online and a lot of sites popped up. I would try to find specific recipes that would fall into each category in my magazine. I got a lot of my recipes from the site "Allrecipes" and "Eating Well." The dill salmon recipe is my mom's recipe and I decided to do this one for the main recipe in my magazine because it's healthy and it was convenient for me to make. I made up some other food titles that I knew would be good and healthy, such as, Chicken kebabs and burrito bowls. These also came to mind because I make them in my house. I know they are easy to make and don't take a long time. When I was looking for recipes I chose the ones that looked the most appealing to me and that I would try to make at home. Also, they all correlated with my healthy eating magazine and I tried to pick recipes that wouldn't take a very long time to make.

Flat Plan

Image
My flat plan contains the same categories as my table of contents. I wrote the word "title" under each category so it would be known that the page is not a recipe. All the other pages are recipes and ads. I placed the recipes after each category and had 4 or 5 recipes for each. In my research on magazines I noticed that they didn't really have any ads in their magazines, but I decided that I would put ads in mine. There was one or two magazines that placed the ads in random places. I started out my flat plan without many ads and then towards the middle I started to put a lot more ads. I put ads after the category titles and even after recipes. For example, recipe. ad, and recipe. These ads could be food based ads or any ingredient that is supposed to be used in the previous recipe. If there was a non- related food/ingredient ad, they would be placed after the whole entire section which would be after the last recipe in each category. There is also a bundle of ads too,...

Table of Contents Template

Image
Since I am doing a recipe based magazine on healthy eating, I decided to make specific sections of where you can find certain meals. I added some extra other fun headings in my contents to spice up my my table of contents and my magazine overall. The heading "5 Smart Foods" is supposed to be an article, but with lots of pictures and this would take up two pages. The heading "Soup for Days" is just a list of several soups on one page and how you can make them healthier. The heading "Picnic Date Night" is supposed to be on two pages as well and it would contain recipes and foods you can take on a picnic. All the other headings have up to 4 or 5 recipes in them and they would each take up one page. The "Main Course with Sides" has 4 meals in total and each meal takes up two pages I thought I should do this because since it is a meal with sides, it would need a lot of space for each recipe and have lots of pictures. I put all these sections in...

Cover Design Template

Image
I looked at two different magazines so I could have a clear example of how I should make my template. I chose these colors all together because I thought they would compliment each other. I chose the title "Healthy Eats" because it was the first thing that came to mind. I chose the title as blue and the font as Adobe Hebrew because I thought it would look nice. It's a nice pop of color and the font looks classy and fancy at the same time. Under that I included one of the main dishes which is a featured meal or the dish of the day in this magazine. This main dish is " Dill Salmon" which will be the main recipe of this magazine. I chose this recipe because my mom makes it all the time and it would be easier for me to make it. Under the words "Dill Salmon" I decided to write "Tasty and Fresh" to persuade the customers to buy this magazine. I used black for these words and two different fonts. For the recipe itself I used a bold and dark...
